alea adigweme is a writer, artist, and educator based in Iowa City. Her research, which is deeply informed by her experiences as a sex worker, centers around the ways women of visible African descent use visual media to subvert dominant narratives about their sexuality. In addition to teaching Rhetoric and English Language Acquisition at the undergraduate level, alea has also led workshops on negotiation, consent, healthy sexual communication, and BDSM 101. In August 2015, she began a doctoral program in Communication Studies at the University of Iowa, where also she earned an MFA in Nonfiction Writing in 2012.
