My interest in psychology commenced as a result of my exposure to vulnerable populations in my hometown of Brooklyn, New York. Growing up in an economically disadvantaged area, I initially became interested in the challenges of racial minorities. As I grew and ventured in other areas of New York City, I became aware of many challenges of sexual minorities, particularly Black gay men, during the height of the HIV/AIDS crisis. I had a strong ability to understand how biopsychosocial forces can shape mental conditions. Since those early years I have bridged that interest to work with other communities including individuals with chronic mental and medical illnesses in a variety of clinical environments. I utilize both psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioral interventions to increase patient insight as well as move him or her toward behavioral activation. Since March 2012, I have been working with various branches of the United States military providing outpatient psychological care to those across the race, gender, and sexual orientation spectrum. During my APA accredited internship at Howard University, I worked with University Counseling Service, Howard University Hospital, as well as the District of Columbia Superior Court providing therapy and psychological evaluations.
